Four-leaf clovers

I live adjacent to luck. I see it bless others and nod its head at me.

A long time ago that would bother me.

But I’ve grown used to its distance. I’ve grown fond of its distance. To have great gain would risk suffering greater loss. So I nod my head back. I thank it for giving me enough to live a blessed life. What little it sends my way is more than I could dream of.

I’ll watch others find four-leaf clovers and I’ll smile at my little clover. I’ll smile at my normalcy, never needing more. I’ll watch them count their petals and name off “faith, hope, love, and luck.”  What great things to have. But I have great things too. I may not have a four-leaf clover, despite my efforts to find one, but I have what I need. My books and a few friends.

You may see me as compromising, or too scared to make a leap. Perhaps I am.

I could take more risks. Maybe the more you risk, the closer luck gets. The more you need it, the more it shows.

Maybe one day I’ll look at my shoes as I often do, and between my feet I’ll see it there.

My four-leaf clover.

The one that’s waited for me all those years. Just like I waited for it.

If I can make one smile with a few words, it will be worth all the pain it took to write them.
